Freemasons’ Hall

Oil painting on canvas (28″ x 40″) by Bro. Henry Josiah DeForest (1855-1924), one-time curator of the Vancouver Museum. The building is no longer in existence. The painting hung for many years in the Grand Lodge offices, and is currently in the Vancouver Masonic Library and Archives warehouse in Burnaby.
There are two noteworthy details in the painting. Above the door can be seen a masonic square and compasses emblem, while behind the building is a tethered goat and, in the edge of the forest, a tent.

Built by local members of the lodge, the top floor was occupied by Mount Hermon Lodge, No. 491, R.S., (now No. 7, B.C.R.) from 1869 until 2 April 1887, when the lodge relocated to Vancouver. Vancouver archivist, Major Matthews, records that the building was known—at various times—as the London Institute, the Hastings Institute, or the Mechanic’s Institute.
