Figure 45: The backgrounds drawn by George Herriman (1880-1944) were an often surreal flow-of-consciousness doodling. The use of an eye and pyramid in this 27 September, 1931 comic strip was not necessarily inspired by the USA Great Seal, nor for that matter does the circle with a dot have to represent an eye.
