Sir William S. Gilbert

November 18, 1836 – May 29, 1911 William Schwenck Gilbert, militiaman, barrister, librettist and author of the Bab Ballads published in 1869, is best remembered for his twenty-five year partnership with Arthur Sullivan which produced a total of fourteen comic operas. Gilbert was knighted by Edward VII in 1907 and died of a heart attack in 1911, at age 74, brought on from rescuing a drowning woman. Raised. June 23, 1871 Lodge St. Machar No. 54, Aberdeen, Scotland
