Alexander Edmund Batson Davie, the son of a medical doctor, was born in Somerset, England. Moving to Victoria, BC with his parents in 1862, he was called to the British Columbia bar in 1873, and was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1875 from the riding of Lillooet. Appointed Provincial Secretary, he lost his seat in a 1877 bi-election, then was re-elected in 1882. Davie assumed the Premier’s office upon William Smithe’s death in March 1887. He himself died in 1889, after a lengthy illness.
