May 7, 1833 – December 10, 1918 Born near Ipswich, Suffolk, England, John Turner emigrated to Halifax in 1856. He built a thriving business there which he sold in 1862 and moved to Victoria where he established the Victoria Produce Market, and later, a general retail supply business. A justice of the peace and warden of St. John’s Church, he was elected alderman three times before assuming the Mayor’s office and serving as Chief Magistrate of Victoria until 1881. He retired from public life until July 1886 when he was elected to the Legislature. He became Premier in March 1895, an office he held until July 1898. Under Dunsmuir’s government in 1900 he was Minister of Finance, and from 1901 to 1915 he served in London as Agent-General.
